Header - Game Overview
Main image - Game Overview

Three Kobolds in a Trench Coat is a bluffing, party game for 2-4 players. After spending too long in the dark, the Kobolds are ready to see what life is like in the village of Crumblebatch. But there's a problem: the villagers aren’t exactly welcoming to monsters. To blend in, the Kobolds have come up with a cunning plan - to dress up in a trench coat and pretend to be a regular person.

Now, as a “citizen”, players must avoid suspicion. Each player must keep their Kobolds hidden by completing Quests, collecting Gold, and defeating opponents in Challenges.

Pay the Guards to redirect attention toward others and use Items to protect themselves or expose their rivals’ Kobolds one by one. The last player with hidden Kobolds wins the game.

Main image - Game Setup

Each player takes a Player Screen and places it in front of them.

All decks are shuffled individually and placed in the centre of all players, leaving space for a discard pile next to each.

Each player takes 3 Kobolds cards, 1 Item card, and 10 Gold tokens, and places them face-up behind their Player Screen, but keeping them hidden from other players.

Reveal the top 2 cards of the Item deck and place them face-up next to the deck - these become the Shopkeeper's Choice cards.

Place the remaining Gold in the token tray (known as the Bank), and put the Bank and dice to the side of the play area. Players will collect Gold throughout the game. All Gold spent during the game is returned to the Bank.

All players roll a six-sided dice to determine who takes their turn first. The player who rolls the highest number plays first.

These Icons and what they represent are displayed in the rulebook on page 8, and at the bottom of their player screen.

Main image - Item Cards

At the start of each of your turns, you can decide whether you would like to buy or sell an Item card.

If buying an Item card, you can only buy 1 per turn, and can hold a maximum of 3 Item cards (unless using a Satchel of Storage) at any time.

You can either buy a random Item card from the top of the Item Deck, or choose a Shopkeeper's Choice card.

Although the Shopkeeper's Choice cards might be tempting, the other players will know what you have just bought too.

You cannot play an Item card during the turn it was purchased. Although, as soon as your turn ends, you may play it whenever you like.

Some Item cards are situational and may only be used during specific conditions or Events, while others may be played at any time.

There is an Item Reference on pages 20-26 of the Rulebook stating how and when each Item card can be played.

Alternatively, you can sell as many Item cards as you like during your Item Phase, gaining 3 Gold for each Item card.

The Item Phase is optional, and you can skip it if you don't want to buy or sell an Item card, or if you don't have the Gold to.

Main image - Event Cards

Next, you reveal and read out the top card of the Event deck, then resolve its effect. Once resolved, you end your turn, passing play clockwise to the next player.

There are four types of Event cards: Quest, Challenge, Tax, and Guard.

Quest

Each Quest card has a story explaining the quest your Kobolds go on. These quests also require one of your Kobolds to have a skill, or two in some cases, high enough to complete them successfully.

But that's not the only way to claim the reward. If none of your Kobolds have the skill needed to complete the quest, you can bluff your way through it.

To complete a Quest, you must choose one of your Kobolds and play it face-down next to the Quest card. It is then up to the other players to decide whether they believe you.

If no players call your bluff:

  • You return your chosen Kobold to your hand without revealing it, and you gain the Quest reward shown on the card.

If one or more players call your bluff:

  • Confirm who is Calling a Bluff. You then reveal your chosen Kobold card.

If the Kobold meets or exceeds the required Skill:

  • You still gain the Quest reward.

  • Each challenger (those who Called a Bluff) suffers the Quest penalty.

  • The revealed Kobold is discarded, and you draw a new one from the top of the Kobold deck.

  • Players who did not Call a Bluff take no action. They neither gain a reward nor suffer a penalty.

If your Kobold does not meet the required Skill:

  • Each challenger gains the Quest reward.

  • You suffer the Quest penalty. If the penalty is to Lose a Kobold, it must be the Kobold you used for this Quest. Otherwise, the revealed Kobold is discarded, and you draw a new one from the top of the Kobold deck.

  • Players who did not Call a Bluff take no action. They neither gain a reward nor suffer a penalty.

Challenge

Challenge Events are always a player vs. player event, in which the active player chooses another player to be their opponent, competing against them in mini-games (e.g. Arm Wrestling, Staring Contest, Coin Flip, or a game of Trumps).

At the bottom of each Challenge card is a reward section, which will explain the consequences of winning or losing the Challenge.

Whilst some Challenges have a Gold penalty to be paid to the winner of a Challenge, some force the loser to Lose a Kobold.

With some Challenges requiring physical strength, or prolonged eye contact, If either involved player feels uncomfortable participating in a Challenge, they can decline a revealed Challenge card.

In this case, the active player reveals a new Event card from the top of the Event deck, and play continues.

Alternatively, there is a Challenge Lite game mode where players can play without any Challenges if they prefer.

All rules for these Challenges can be found on pages 27–33 of the Rulebook.

Tax

When a Tax Event is revealed on a player's turn, that player must pay the penalty stated on the Tax card. This penalty is an amount of Gold to be paid to the Bank.

Unfortunately, even Kobolds have to pay their taxes if they want to blend in.

Guard

Guards are on the lookout and occasionally appear asking about sneaky Kobolds.

When a Guard Event is revealed, all players must secretly conceal an amount of their Gold in their fist. Players may choose to conceal any amount of Gold from 0 up to the total they currently possess.

Each player then presents their fist, and players together reveal the amount of Gold concealed in their fists.

The player (or players if they are tied) who reveals the lowest amount of Gold will now Lose a Kobold. All players then return all Gold used during this Guard Event into the bank.

Lose a Kobold

Any time an Item card, Event, or rule states that a player is required to Lose a Kobold, they must discard one of their Kobolds.

Running out of Gold

Each time a player must pay an amount of Gold greater than the amount they have, they must pay all of their remaining Gold, and also Lose a Kobold.

Determining the winner

If a player loses all 3 of their Kobold cards, they lose and are out of the game. The game carries on for all remaining players. The last remaining player holding one or more hidden Kobold card(s) is declared the winner of the game.

In the event of a tie, each player adds together the cost values of all remaining Item cards they hold and any unspent Gold. The player with the highest value is declared the winner of the game.

This is our first time self-publishing a board game, but we are not entirely new to the scene. We have been working events and conventions since 2021, and together as FanCraftedLtd since 2023, including at the UK Games Expo and MCM Comic Con.

With this being our first time developing a board game, there has been a steep learning curve, but we have partnered with Whatz Game manufacturing and Spiral Galaxy Games to produce the best game we can, and fulfil orders as soon as we can.

However, there may be unexpected setbacks, challenges, and other unknowns outside of our control that could affect the timeline/shipping/manufacturing.

Regardless of any issues that may crop up, we are determined to provide our best service, as well as keeping you up to date with transparent and honest communication as often as we are able to.
